Analytical research forum 2024 (ARF24)

Introduction
The Analytical research forum (ARF) provides an opportunity for students and early career researchers from analytical science communities to present their work alongside high profile scientists. The event will showcase cutting-edge analytical chemistry and applications to stimulate new research, collaboration and engagement between academia and industry.

Join us in London in June 2024.  Our one day format includes keynotes and invited talks, panel discussions plus additional oral contributions selected by the Scientific Committee from the submitted abstracts.

This year’s ARF will include a panel discussion on “Engaging with the Community”. We are seeking questions in advance from the audience. Please email your general questions for the panel, or questions for individual panel members, to events@rsc.org by 11 June 2024 and we will try to incorporate as many questions as we can.

Abstract Submission
Abstract submission is now closed

We encourage abstract submissions from all areas of analytical and bioanalytical research across all applications including, but not limited to:
  • Spectroscopy, mass spectrometry and electroanalysis
  • Sampling and separation
  • Omics
  • Sensors
  • Chemometrics and data analysis
  • Applications in diagnostics, pharmaceutical analysis, forensics and environmental.
We welcome oral and poster abstracts from MSc and PhD students, postdoctoral researchers and all early career scientists.
Poster abstracts from BSc students are also welcomed.

Planning your trip

We encourage delegates who are planning to attend events in person to arrange suitable travel and accommodation insurance, which should include cover for the postponement or cancellation of travel caused by regulations and guidelines relating to Covid-19. We also recommend considering flexible travel and accommodation booking options where possible.

In-person registration includes:

Bursaries

Researcher Development and Travel Grants

If you are an RSC Member and you are one of the following

  • A PhD student;
  • An academic researcher within 10 years of completion of a PhD (including postdoctoral researchers);
  • Working in the industry within 10 years of leaving full-time education or;
  • A technician within 10 years of leaving full-time education.

You can apply for up to £500 to support your participation in this event.Please note it is not necessary to have confirmation of abstract acceptance before applying for a Researcher Development and Travel Grant and we encourage you to apply as early as possible. This Grant is open for 11 months of the year – January to November.
 
Applicants must apply for activities occurring at least 2 months from the end of your application month. Please see the website for up-to-date information on eligibility, how to apply and submission deadlines.
 
Researcher Development and Travel Grants can be applied for in addition to Grants for Carers and Assistance Grants.


Grants for Carers

With our Grants for carers, you can apply for up to £1,200 per year to help you attend a chemistry-related meeting, conference or workshop or a professional development event. This money would be used to cover any additional costs you incur, paying for care that you usually provide.  Please visit the website for further information and eligibility criteria.
 

Accessibility grants

With our Accessibility grants, you can apply for up to £1,200 per year to help with the cost of specific support to attend a chemistry-related meeting, conference, workshop or professional development event. This support might be any form of equipment, service, or other personal expense associated with meeting your access needs.

Vicky Hilborne, University College London, United Kingdom

Dr Victoria Hilborne is an Associate Professor at University College London (UCL) Department of 91AV, with interest in analytical, environmental chemistry and education for sustainable development. Since joining UCL 91AV in 2016, Vicky has substantially modernised physical and analytical chemistry data processing and laboratory courses and introduced new approaches to assessment and feedback in level 7 Topics in Modern 91AV. Before joining UCL she was a lecturer and senior technician in Analytical 91AV for forensic, biosciences and chemical engineering at London South Bank University (LSBU). During her time at LSBU she gained her PhD in measurement of contaminant dispersion in ventilated indoor air and predictive model development. Followed by post doctoral work on gas kinetics of 'red oil' nuclear fuel reprocessing simulant with the Fire and Explosion Research Group, and gained a PGCHE. Prior to joining LSBU she worked as a Food Health and Safety Scientist for Camden BRI (formerly Brewing Research International) and for NERC Institute of Terrestrial Ecology tracing rural atmospheric ozone. She has a BSc (Hons) in Environmental 91AV from Edinburgh University. Before studying for her first degree, Vicky worked in product development and quality control for Procter and Gamble and Valentine paints. She is an elected as a member of the 91AV Analytical Science Community Council, and works with the RSC on Sustainable Laboratory and Indoor Air Quality monitoring initiatives. She is also a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy.


Claire White, Selden Research Ltd., United Kingdom

Ms Claire White is an Analytical Chemist, Product Development Chemist and GLP Study Director at Selden Research Ltd, a company that manufactures cleaning chemicals for the professional sector. Claire developed her first analytical method at the age of 16 during a Nuffield Research Placement at Bristol Myers Squibb and then continued to work each summer in the QC department. In 2008, she graduated with a Clinical Science degree and began full time work as a lab technician in the QC department at Selden Research. After particularly enjoying participating in research and development, she was promoted to Development Chemist developing a wide array of formulations including washing up detergent, laundry detergent, floor cleaners and bathroom cleaners. During this time, Claire became a member of the RSC and gained Registered Scientist accreditation. In 2018, she began work on producing a GLP accredited analytical laboratory for Selden Research which was subsequently approved by the MHRA in 2022. Claire achieved the title of Chartered Chemist in 2023 in and is an elected member of the 91AV Analytical Science Community Council. Claire is a keen STEM Ambassador and has mentored several students through the Nuffield Research Placement programme.
