The desire to develop a more sustainable transportation system, the necessity to lower our dependence on fossil fuel, and the demand for a clean and secure energy future are pushing the development of low or zero emission electric and hybrid electric cars powered by a new generation of electric energy storage and conversion systems. Further, electric energy storage systems play an indispensible role in smart grids to manage the mismatch between electricity generation and demand, especially for electricity generation from renewable and sustainable sources because of their intermittent and cyclic nature. Even for the conventional power plants, efficient load-leveling can dramatically improve energy efficiency, reliability, and energy security while reducing emissions of green house gas and air pollutants. Under these environmental requirements, this Korea-UK workshop on energy conversion and storage brings together leading scientists to share R & D activities in green energy between these two countries.
