A return steam journey through the beautiful High Weald to one of the most famous and evocative castles in Britain. Bodiam was built in 1385 as both a defence and a comfortable home. The exterior is virtually complete and the ramparts rise dramatically above the broad moat. Enough of the interior survives to give a vivid impression of castle life with spiral staircases and battlements to explore and wonderful views of the Rother Valley.
We plan to catch the 1.15 pm steam train from Tenterden station, arriving at Bodiam at 2.00 pm. We will have a 15-minute introductory film and then time to explore the Castle with return rides to Tenterden at 3.25 pm on the Heritage Diesel train or at 4.25 pm on the steam train. There is car parking at Tenterden and restaurants at both Tenterden and Bodiam for lunches and teas.
