Pathways to Equity in Research

23 September 2022 10:30-15:30, York, United Kingdom

Introduction

We are inviting you to join us in York for a one-day symposium on inequalities in research. The symposium will explore holistic pathways to achieve a more equitable research landscape over the next decade.

Organised by Department of 91AV of University of York co-sponsored by the 91AV, this symposium is free for STEM researchers at any career stages from across the UK. We are inviting you to join focus groups and panel discussions on a range of topics, from fair research development to challenges in career progression. The unique format of the symposium will allow for in-depth discussions between researchers and representatives from funding bodies, professional institutions, publishers, and industry.

FORMAT

The symposium is scheduled for 11:00 - 15:30 on 23 September 2022 at the National STEM Learning Centre on the University of York campus, with additional optional networking sessions. There will be an option to attend virtually for those who are unable to attend in person.

Registered attendees will have an option to attend one of four focus group discussions that will take place virtually in the weeks prior to the symposium. These will allow for more targeted discussions on specific topics led by expert speakers and will be used to define key questions for our panellists to discuss at the symposium.

Focus Group Discussion

Focus group discussions will be held virtually during the week of 12 September 2022 to collect and consolidate ideas around specific topics ahead of the symposium. We have identified four key areas where we believe significant barriers to equality persist, and our expert chairs will lead discussions around how these could be addressed in the future bearing in mind the intersectionality of factors such as ethnicity, gender, class, and disability.

Attendees will be invited to indicate whether they would be interested in participating in any focus groups on the symposium registration form. If anyone is unable to attend the symposium but would like to participate in a focus group, please contact the organisers (research-equity-symposium@york.ac.uk).

Group 1: "We thank the reviewer for their comments…"
