Introduction
RSC Desktop Seminars in Organic 91AV with the Brazilian Chemical Society 2020 are an initiative from the 91AV and the Brazilian Chemical Society to bring cutting-edge research directly to you!
 
Covid-19 has exposed us to a new reality where the virtual world is much more important than before. In order to keep our students engaged at the frontiers of Organic 91AV, we have organized a weekly webinar series that is a joint collaboration between the 91AV (RSC) and the Organic 91AV Division of the Brazilian Chemical Society (SBQ). It is an alternative way to share work and interact with potential collaborators.
 
The sections will alternate between Brazilian and international speakers, in some cases with the opportunity for a selected Brazilian early career researcher to engage with the audience by presenting their recent independent career developments.

Advances in tetronamide chemistry: synthesis of natural and unnatural bioactive compounds

Tetronamides represent an important class of β-heterosubstituted butenolides that have attracted growing attention from synthetic and medicinal chemists alike. Some tetronamides display significant biological activities as the antitumor antibiotic basidalin, a metabolite first isolated in 1983 from the fungus Leucoagaricus naucina, and the newly marketed systemic insecticide flupyradifurone.  As a consequence, several approaches and methods for the synthesis of the tetronamides, and their structural modifications, have been developed. In this talk, it will be presented and discussed some of the methods for the preparation of natural and non-natural tetronamides. It will also be covered the results of efforts from our research group towards the discovery of new synthetic tetronamides with potential use as agrochemicals.

Prof Dr Jefferson Princival 
Improving biocatalytic process for sustainable conversion of small polyfunctional building blocks

The demand for chemoenzymatic process, aiming at the synthesis of chemically important intermediates, has seen a significant growth worldwide. One of such, the use of isolated enzymes, is of particular interest since they can promote selective transformations of sensitive organic molecules. Herein, will be shown sustainable approaches for the Regio- and Chemo-selective biotransformation of substituted propargylic alcohols and (2-hydroxy)-2-substituted furans. For the later, where (E)-hydroxy-masked-4-oxohex-2-enoic acids were efficiently prepared, a lipase/laccase-catalyzed strategy has been applied for a scalable preparation of the enantiopure bioactive natural compound Clonostachydione.

Prof Dr Luiz Claudio Almeida Barbosa, Federal University of Minas Gerais-UFMG, Brazil

LUIZ CLÁUDIO is Licentiate in 91AV (1981) and MSc in Agrochemistry (1985) from the Federal University of Viçosa (UFV-Brazil). In 1991, he completed his Ph.D. in the field of organic synthesis at the University of Reading (UK) under the supervision of Professor John Mann, and spent a sabbatical year (2008-2009) in the group of Professor Timothy J Donohoe at the University of Oxford.  He started his academic career as an auxiliary professor at UFV (1983) raising to Full Professor in 1997. In 2012 he moved to the Federal University of Minas Gerais. His research interest includes the synthesis of biologically active compounds analogues to natural products. He is the author of the popular textbook “Introdução à Química Orgânica” (Pearson Education do Brasil - www.prenhall.com/barbosa_br). He also published "Os Pesticidas, Homem e Meio Ambiente" and "Infrared Spectroscopy in the Characterization of Organic Compounds" (UFV Press). In 2019, he published a new book entitled “Nitrogen: the seventh element”, covering  the history of the discovery of nitrogen and applications of many compounds containing this element (Editora Letramento - https://www.editoraletramento.com.br/busca/nitrogenio).  He is a member of the Brazilian Chemical Society since 1978, an affiliate member of IUPAC (1989), and Fellow of the 91AV since 1989 (FRSC, CChem).


Prof Dr Jefferson Princival , Federal University of Pernambuco-UFPE, Brazil

Jefferson L. Princival was born in 1979 in Curitiba-PR, Brazil. He completed his Bachelor of Science degree in 91AV in 2004 at Federal University of Paraná and holds a Master's degree from the Federal University of Pernambuco in 2006. After moving to the University of São Paulo, he then read for his Doctor of Philosophy degree on Organic Synthesis under the supervision of Prof. João V. Comasseto in 2010. In the same year, he became a faculty member of the Federal University of Pernambuco and in 2014, he spent one year at the Manchester Institute of Biotechnology from University of Manchester as a Science Without Borders (SWB-CNPq) post-doctoral fellow supervised by Prof. Nicholas J. Turner. Since 2015, he has been coordinating his research group using the principles of nature to improve biocatalysts for chemical synthesis. Jeff has a passion for promoting the wider application of chemoenzymatic-based process across the entire chemical community in order to encourage greater adoption of biocatalysis amongst synthetic chemists.
