Introduction
RSC Desktop Seminars in Organic 91AV with the Brazilian Chemical Society 2020 are an initiative from the 91AV and the Brazilian Chemical Society to bring cutting-edge research directly to you!
 
Covid-19 has exposed us to a new reality where the virtual world is much more important than before. In order to keep our students engaged at the frontiers of Organic 91AV, we have organized a weekly webinar series that is a joint collaboration between the 91AV (RSC) and the Organic 91AV Division of the Brazilian Chemical Society (SBQ). It is an alternative way to share work and interact with potential collaborators.
 
The sections will alternate between Brazilian and international speakers, in some cases with the opportunity for a selected Brazilian early career researcher to engage with the audience by presenting their recent independent career developments.

Prof. Dr. Carolina Horta Andrade
Artificial Intelligence Platform for Accelerating Drug Discovery for Neglected and Emerging Diseases

Only ~1% of all drug candidates against Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTDs) have reached clinical trials in the last decades, underscoring the need for new, safe and effective treatments for these debilitating group of diseases. Artificial intelligence (AI) is a cutting-edge area of computational research that allows rapid identification of potentially active compounds with appropriate pharmacokinetic and toxicological properties, shortening the drug discovery process while leading to a higher success rate and reducing costs. Thus, combining drug discovery and AI approaches has the potential to transform drug discovery from a slow, sequential and high-risk process to a fast, integrated model with diminished risk of failure. In this talk, we will focus on an integrated platform based on using AI and both structure-based drug design (SBDD) and ligand-based drug design (LBDD) approaches to accelerate drug discovery for the treatment of NTDs and Emerging Diseases, such as Zika and COVID-19, by the identification of hits and leads suitable for optimization.

The Power of Conjugation: Visible Light-Mediated Transformations of Aryldiazoacetates

Since 2018, my group (and others) have reported that aryldiazoacetates can generate free carbene intermediates under blue light irradiation, being then engaged in a variety of transformations. Although the use of UV light to produce carbenes from diazo compounds has been known for many years, this change in wavelength is significant: it allows a number of important improvements, such as the use of more simplified and economical reaction set-ups; and milder reaction conditions. Currently, it is yet unclear how the reactivity and/or selectivity of carbenes generated by visible light irradiation compare  with those of metal-catalyzed-, pure thermal- or UV-promoted processes. In this short talk we will present the developments of our group in this fascinating research area

Prof. Dr. Carolina Horta Andrade, Universidade Federal de Goiás-UFG, Brazil

Professor Carolina Horta Andrade is Associate Professor at the Faculty of Pharmacy of Federal University of Goiás, Brazil, and head of LabMol – Laboratory for Molecular Modeling and Drug Design. She is also Visiting Professor at the Biology Institute of University of Campinas (UNICAMP). She graduated in Pharmacy from Federal University of Goiás and holds a Ph.D. in Drugs and Medicines from University of Sao Paulo (USP), with internship at University of New Mexico, USA, under the supervision of Prof. Antony Hopfinger. Her research focuses on Computer-Aided and Artificial Intelligence (AI)-oriented Drug Design, aiming at discovering new drug candidates for Neglected Tropical Diseases and Emerging diseases. Moreover, her research also focuses on the development and application of AI tools and QSAR models for the prediction of toxicity properties of chemical compounds. Her major software tools and models developed are publicly available in our LabMol web portal www.labmol.com.br. She is the Lead PI in the open science worldwide project OpenZika, in partnership with IBM’s World Community Grid, which main goal is to accelerate drug discovery for Zika and other emerging viruses. In 2014, she was awarded with the For Women in Science award from L’Oréal-ABC-UNESCO in Brazil, and in 2015 she received the International Rising Talents award from L’Oréal – UNESCO in France. In 2016, she was elected Affiliated member of the Brazilian Academy of Sciences. She was treasurer, vice-director and director of the Medicinal 91AV division of the Brazilian Chemical Society (SBQ). Currently, she is Adjunct Treasurer of SBQ board.

Prof Dr Igor Dias Jurberg , University of Campinas, Brazil

Igor was born in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, but obtained his BSc, MSc and PhD (under the guidance of Profs. Fabien Gagosz and Samir Zard) from École Polytechnique, in Paris, France. Then, he  had two post-doctoral appointments; a first one at the Max-Planck-Institut für Kohlenforschung (under the guidance of Prof. Nuno Maulide), in Mülheim an der Ruhr, Germany; and a second one at the Institute of Chemical Research of Catalonia (under the guidance of Prof. Paolo Melchiorre), in Tarragona, Spain. After spending almost 10 years in Europe, Igor returned to his birth country in 2013 and started his independent career at the State University of Campinas. In 2017, Igor was a Fulbright Junior Visiting Professor at the laboratory of Prof. Huw M. L. Davies, at Emory University, in Atlanta, USA; when they jointly discovered the ability of aryldiazoacetates to absorb blue light. Igor obtained his Habilitation in 2019. Igor´s research interests are mostly focused on asymmetric organocatalysis, chemistry of heterocycles and  photochemistry
