Introduction

Welcome

On behalf of the 91AV Analytical Division and Cancer Research UK, we invite you to join us in February 2021 for an online workshop and networking event on the early detection of cancer.
 
Measuring cancer earlier will bring together analytical scientists, cancer biologists and clinicians to explore the challenges and opportunities for early detection cancer research as well as foster new interdisciplinary collaborations for early detection funding opportunities.
 
The programme will feature keynote speakers from the different scientific communities giving their perspectives on the challenges and opportunities for early detection, as well an invited talk from scientists currently collaborating on a CRUK early detection sandpit award. The remainder of the programme will focus on workshops and structured networking sessions to enable the communities to connect with each other.

The expression of interest has now closed and successful applicants have been contacted. 

We welcome applications from early career researchers, mid-career researchers, established independent researchers and industry researchers working in the fields of cancer biology, biomedicine, analytical science, physical science and engineering as well as clinicians and health professionals.

The 91AV is keen to encourage and enable as many people as possible to attend our events, to benefit from the networking opportunities and the chance to hear talks from leaders in the field. Expression of interest

The expression of interest has now closed and successful applicants have been contacted. 
 
Expressions of interest to participate in the event will be reviewed by the Measuring Cancer Earlier organising committee to ensure a balanced representation of expertise.
 
Applicants should demonstrate their suitable skills and expertise to attend the workshop. We are not looking for your academic publication or research track record, but rather how you might approach early detection using innovative and collaborative ways.
 
Applicants will be notified of the outcome of the review process within about 2 weeks of the submission deadline.

Bursaries

Grants for Carers

You can apply for up to a maximum of £1000/year to assist with additional financial costs that you incur for care usually provided by you whilst you attend a chemistry related meeting, conference or workshop or a professional development event.
 
Caring responsibilities are wide and varied, and so each application will be individually assessed, examples of applications that we will consider include:

• paying for extra home help or nursing care for a dependent whilst you will not be present
• additional medical/respite care for a dependent whilst you will not be present
• travel expenses for a relative to travel with you to care for dependents whilst you attend a meeting or event
• paying for extended hours with a care worker/childminder/play scheme to cover time when you will arrive home later than normal.

You are eligible to apply if:

• you are a chemist
• you will incur additional caring expenses whilst attending a chemistry-related meeting, conference, event or workshop or a professional development event
• you will use these funds to cover the cost of care that you usually provide
• you are based in the UK or Ireland or if not, you will normally have held three years RSC membership (past or current)

These grants for carers have been introduced following the 91AV Breaking the barriers report where 78% of chemists working in UK academia felt that managing parenting and/or caring responsibilities has an impact on women’s retention and progression. This fund is not limited to women scientists and welcomes applications from anyone with caring responsibilities
