GCMS Training: A Hands on Approach Nigeria 2021

15 - 19 November 2021, Lagos, Nigeria


Introduction
After careful consideration of the continuously evolving situation with COVID-19, we have made the decision to host the GCMS in Nigeria on the 15 November 2021. The courses are very important to us, however given the latest health news and travel restrictions that delegates are experiencing we have made the difficult decision to accept applications only from Nigeria for this course at this time. 

The selection process for applicants will still be going ahead, and all delegates will be contacted and an announcement made as soon as the selection is made.

This workshop is supported by GSK as part of our five-year partnership to enhance the capabilities of African scientists in modern analytical techniques. We will train more than 400 African scientists by the end of 2021, as well as training Local Trainers to train others, leaving a self-sustaining programme and a lasting legacy.

The Pan Africa 91AV Network was set up by the 91AV to advance the chemical sciences across Africa by building a self-sustaining science base. This expanded analytical science training programme will develop your practical analytical techniques to solve local challenges and contribute to global scientific knowledge.

Applications are invited for the above training course; we welcome applications from researchers, lecturers, technicians, MSc students and PhD students in the chemical sciences from Universities and research institutions across Nigeria.

The training course will cover the practical aspects of Gas Chromatography, method development, quantitative analysis and spectral interpretation of GC-MS.  This course has been independently verified through peer review and formally approved by 91AV to be of high quality and suitable for professional development of chemical scientists.

Applications

Places are limited to 15 delegates only. Application deadline 27 September 2021.  If you already applied to the course in 2020, you do not need to apply again as your application will be carried over.

Delegates who have attended a previous PACN GC-MS course in Kenya, Ethiopia, Nigeria or Ghana are not eligible to attend again.  This is a repeat of the course.

Selection Criteria

The participants will be selected based upon the information provided in your application, against the published selection criteria:
  • All participants should have a HND or BSc (or equivalent) in the chemical sciences, thus demonstrating suitable background knowledge
  • Participants can be MSc students, PhD students, lecturers, researchers, professors or technical staff. A range of experience levels in each course is preferred.
  • Demonstrable benefit to research or teaching in your home institution
  • Strong relevance to your current or planned research or teaching area
  • Potential impact upon the individual’s experience and career prospects
  • Immediate application of the techniques learnt
  • Access to equipment in your home country will be considered
  • Benefit to home institution and the wider chemistry community in your country

Accommodation

This will be provided for all delegates, including food.  All delegates and trainers will be staying in a guest house close to the University. 
Speakers
Dr. (Mrs.) Adebola Adeyi, University of Ibadan, Nigeria

Dr. Adebola Adeyi is the Laboratory Manager, Geo-Environmental Research Centre Laboratory, Basel Convention Coordinating Centre, Federal Ministry of Environment  University of Ibadan Linkage Centre, University of Ibadan, Nigeria. She bagged her Ph.D. in Environmental/Analytical 91AV in 2007and worked at Berger Paints Nigeria Plc. She has since published in international and local journals of repute. She participated in the Training on Advanced Analytical Techniques Related to Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs) Contaminated Sites Identification by the United Nations Industrial Development Organisation (UNIDO) and Federal Ministry of Environment, Nigeria at the Geo-Environmental Research Centre, Cardiff University, UK in 2009 and 2012, respectively, and took part in the pilot testing of the UNIDO Toolkit for POPs Contaminated Sites Investigation and assessment in Nigeria in 2009. She was a Research Fellow at the Department of 91AV, Rhodes University, South Africa in 2009 and at the Institute of Analytical and Bioanalytical 91AV, Ulm University, Germany in 2013. Her research includes investigating the fate of emerging pollutants in the environment, such as persistent organic pollutants (POPs) and bisphenol-A, etc.; environmentalmodelling, monitoring and chemometrics; nanotechnology and chemical sensor application in environmental analysis; waste management, contaminated site identification, assessment and remediation; and risk assessment.


Dr. ‘Toyin Fatunsin (nee Adetunde), University of Lagos, Nigeria

Oluwatoyin Fatunsin obtained her first degree, Master’s and Doctoral degrees in 91AV from the University of Lagos, Nigeria. She is an alumnus of the Commonwealth Scholarship; she was awarded a one-year Commonwealth Split-Site Scholarship in the School of Pharmacy and Biomedical Science, University of Portsmouth, UK for the 2012/2013 Session. She worked as a chemist under the Nigerian National Youth Service Corps Scheme (NYSC) with Peugeot Automobile Nigeria Ltd. in 2006 and also as a postgraduate research Intern with the Environmental Monitoring Team of Shell Petroleum Development Company Nigeria in 2009. Her research involves the use of analytical techniques in analysing complex matrices which address the sources, fate and behaviour of persistent organic pollutants (POPs). It includes studies on sample preparation methods and the application of High Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC) and Gas Chromatography (GC) for the analysis of trace levels of organic environmental contaminants. She also works on the analysis of potentially toxic elements in contaminated land, sediments and waters. Oluwatoyin has academic publications in reputable national and international journals and has presented her research findings at conferences within and outside Nigeria.


Dr. (Mrs.) Temilola Oluseyi, University of Lagos, Nigeria

Dr. Oluseyi’s research area is Analytical/Environmental 91AV, which involves the use of analytical techniques in analysing environmental samples. It includes studies on sample preparation methods and application of High Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC) and Gas Chromatography (GC) for the analysis of trace levels of organic environmental contaminants in biotic and abiotic matrices. Her research focuses on the sources, fate and behaviour of persistent organic pollutants (POPs), such as polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), organophosphorus flame retardants (OPFRs), polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs), hexabromocyclododecanes (HBCDs), “novel” brominated flame retardants (NBFRs) and dioxins. Other interests of Dr. Oluseyi’s include: the assessment of human exposure to flame retardants with a focus on indoor pathways via inhalation and ingestion of dust and food; measuring the levels of these chemicals and their sources particularly in indoor environments.
