Cancelled: The Astbury Conversation 2020: Seeing into Cells

23 - 24 March 2020, Leeds, United Kingdom

Introduction

Whether you are a researcher wanting to know about the latest developments, or you are simply interested in learning more about the hidden - but fascinating – world of macromolecules, the Astbury Conversation will give you an insight into life in molecular detail.

The theme of this year's event is 'Seeing into Cells.'

Event outline:

  • An academic symposium to include prestigious talks, selected presentations and poster sessions

  • Nobel Prize winner Professor Richard Henderson, CH, FRS, FMedSci, HonFRSC will give the plenary public lecture Zooming in on the molecules of life.

  • Public engagement event, showcasing some of the University’s research, followed by a wine reception.

We are once again delighted to be welcoming a Nobel Prize winner as our keynote speaker. Richard Henderson, CH, FRS, FMedSci, HonFRSC became a Nobel Laureate in 2017, joining our past speakers:

2018 “G protein coupled receptors: challenges for drug discovery” by Professor Brian Kobilka (Nobel Prize 2012), Stanford University

2016 “Picture this: How modelling molecules builds our understanding of life” by Professor Michael Levitt FRS (Nobel Prize 2013), also of Stanford University.

Abstract submission for The Astbury Conversation 2020 will open in August 2019.

Conference Registration: £79.00
The registration fee for the Astbury Conversation 2020 includes attendance at all conference sessions, refreshments, lunches and the social events. Please note accommodation is not included in this rate but can be booked as part of the registration process.

The Astbury Centre brings together researchers from across the University of Leeds - largely from physics, the biological sciences and chemistry - to allow interdisciplinary approaches to be harnessed to understand the molecular basis of life. The Centre has outstanding expertise and research infrastructure in chemical biology, biophysics and all of the major techniques in structural molecular biology. Together, these approaches are combined with analyses of biological function with the ultimate aim of understanding the molecular basis of biological mechanisms in living cells. Our members address major questions associated with biological mechanisms in areas as diverse as membrane proteins; protein folding and assembly; viruses; and motor proteins. The Astbury Centre hosts 4-year PhD programmes funded by the Wellcome Trust and BBSRC that recruit students with the wide range of expertise that may be used to address fundamental biological questions.
