WHAT next? A careers event

3 April 2019 13:15-17:30, Southampton, United Kingdom

Introduction
This is a slightly condensed version of the event we ran in April 2018. The event is different enough from last year that it's worth attending again!

Rationale and aims of the event
The world of employment is changing rapidly, and those entering the workforce today are likely to change career direction numerous times during their careers.  Those with qualifications in chemistry and related disciplines are well placed to take advantage of the situation, given the plethora of transferable skills they develop during their studies.  Nonetheless, it can still be daunting for individuals who are considering how to approach taking their first steps onto the career ladder.  In particular, it may not be immediately obvious to all how the skills developed during a degree in chemistry or a related discipline relate to such a wide range of careers.

This event is aimed at postgraduates, postdocs and other early career scientists already in employment, who have a background in chemistry or a related discipline.  The aim of the event is to provide information and guidance for the next generation of scientists who will be the leaders of tomorrow.

Career speed networking
A range of guest professionals who are using their chemistry skills and knowledge in a range of different contexts will talk to groups of participants about their career background, giving participants the opportunity to learn from their experiences in planning for their own career.  Some of our guests have had jobs in different organisations since embarking on their career, and participants will be able to ask questions about how best to plan and prepare for a successful future.

Workshops
Participants will be able to select from two workshops, including topics such as CV building and interview skills, and an exploration of different career options for chemists.

Hospitality
Refreshments will be provided at various times in during the event, as indicated in the programme.  The event is designed to provide opportunities for informal networking and discussion, and we would encourage all participants to talk to as many people as possible.  A buffet will be served from 16:10, following the afternoon session and prior to the evening session.  All participants are welcome to attend.

Location
The event will take place at the University of Southampton in 91AV (Building 27/29/30), on the Highfield Campus (SO17 1BJ).  Participants should report to the main entrance of Building 30 when they arrive. A campus map can be found here: https://tinyurl.com/ya8jga53.
