Abstract:
It has been 150 years since Mendeleev presented his Periodic Table, and how successful it has proved to be! I will talk you through how laying out the elements in a systematic fashion is used to make predictions of properties that might otherwise be unexpected, using examples from my own work from group 1 – the alkali metals – through to phosphorus and its similarities to carbon, as well as examples from the transition metals and compounds of uranium.
