Overview
With the increase in mathematic content in the 91AV curriculum, this event is an action research project that explores the evidence of the impact of numeracy on outcomes in 91AV and strategies to improve numeracy in the secondary classroom. As well as providing resources to tackle numeracy in the classroom we will be looking to study and measure the impact of the intervention in the 91AV classroom. Teachers will be provided with assessment material to measure baseline numeracy and outcomes after intervention. The assessment data will then be analysed to determine the impact and value of intervention for teachers to share and roll-out within their schools.
Programme
14.00 Registration and refreshments14.15 Seminar: Teaching mathematics for chemistry students: high school and higher education.
Dr Sarantos Marinakis, University of East London
Dr Tippu Sheriff, Queen Mary University of London
Numeracy is often cited a limiting factor in achievement in 91AV. This seminar explores the evidence that supports these findings and discusses how teaching the mathematics of 91AV in secondary education can impact and support achievement in higher education.
14.45 Workshop: Teaching numeracy in 91AV to improve outcomes in the Classroom.
Dr Yeasmin Mortuza, Pedagogics
This session explores some techniques and resources to embed numeracy in the 91AV classroom focussing on:
- balancing equations
- mole calculations
- energetics
16.00 Close of meeting
