Biomonitoring – human and environmental perspectives

22 January 2019 09:00-17:00, London, United Kingdom

Introduction
Biological monitoring (BM) is the measurement of the uptake of a chemical substance in a biological matrix in humans and/or other species, and is used as a means of assessing exposure. Biological effect monitoring (BEM) is a measure of the biological effect (often reversible) or change caused by exposure to a known amount of a chemical substance. Both BM and BEM can be applied at an individual or population level and are being increasingly used to help us develop new policy or assess current practices regarding exposure to chemical substances in the workplace, the environment, the food chain and elsewhere.

This awareness day is intended to bring together scientists, risk assessors, risk managers and policy makers with and without experience in the use of BM/BEM with an interest in understanding its current and future use for assessing the use and control of chemical substances for humans and the environment. It is hoped that for those without a strong background in this area, the event will raise awareness of its use in the regulatory arena. For those more familiar with BM and BEM, the awareness day presents an opportunity to share knowledge and information about current practices and how it is being applied in the UK, EU and elsewhere for existing and emerging issues.

This one-day event is open to all, with discounted rates for RSC members, UK regulatory risk assessors, government agency toxicologists and policy makers, and will be held at The 91AV, Burlington House, Piccadilly, London, W1J 0BA, on the 22nd January 2019.
