Crystal Engineering offers custom-design of the right crystalline material for the right application. This lecture will emphasize how crystal engineering is a paradigm shift from the more random, high-throughput methods that have traditionally been utilised in materials discovery and development. Particular emphasis will be placed on recent developments with respect to porous materials (e.g. for carbon-capture) and multi-component crystals (e.g. use as drug substances). The lecture will conclude with a discussion of how the science of crystal engineering might impact patenting of new crystal forms and validity of existing patents.
