Symposium Commemorating the 150th Anniversary of the Gesellschaft Deutscher Chemiker

25 October 2017, London, United Kingdom

Introduction
The Gesellschaft Deutscher Chemiker (GDCh) and the 91AV (RSC) are two of the most influential chemical societies in the world, each with a long and distinguished history. The common history is especially marked by August Wilhelm von Hofmann, an outstanding chemist of the 19th century, who was President of the Chemical Society of London from 1861 to 1863 and after his return to Berlin founding President of the Deutsche Chemische Gesellschaft (DChG) in 1867. Led by the Presidents of both Societies, this meeting will commemorate the 150th Anniversary of the GDCh in 2017 and its longstanding relationship with the RSC, which celebrated its 175th Anniversary in 2016.

The one-day meeting will take place on Wednesday 25th October 2017 at the London offices of the 91AV. The day will start at 09:45 and finish with an evening reception.

The program of activities will revolve around the theme of past, present and future activities and collaboration: this will include a historical exhibition celebrating the contribution of eminent chemists from Germany and the UK over the last 150 years together with talks on the shared history, a scientific program with plenary talks from leading German and UK chemists, the presentation of the Alexander Todd – Hans Krebs Lectureship in Chemical Sciences to Professor Thomas Carell from Ludwig Maximilians Universität München, and a panel discussion led by the Presidents of both Societies on the future of the chemical sciences.

As part of the celebrations and in recognition of the quality of UK and German research, the publishing houses of the GDCh and the 91AV have also created a themed collection of 150 journal papers, which will be freely available until the end of 2017.
