SCI Young Researchers in Agri-Food 2017: Improving Nutrition by Design - New Developments from Plants to Packaging

Introduction
Synopsis
This event is for early career scientists working in agricultural, environmental, food and nutrition and other relevant sciences contributing to our food supply, health and wellbeing. It is also for all those interested in meeting new talent and learning about innovation in agri-food sciences.

Contributions are expected from a wide range of disciplines such as agronomy, phytochemistry, animal physiology and nutrition, environmental sciences, molecular biology, food chemistry, analytical chemistry, process engineering and packaging technology.

The symposium is aimed at researchers in industry or academia:

This meeting will also focus on career development with a keynote presentation (1) A speaker talking about the influence of the marketplace on innovation in industry “The challenges of meeting customer demands” for example and (2) a workshop on communication. “Social Media for the Food Industry” - Alex Bakker and Neil Reed of marketing company SeeSaw and Rhiannon Garth-Jones of the SCI.
  • Developing processes, packaging, feed and raw materials to produce more nutritious meat, dairy, eggs, vegetables, etc.
  • Improving fatty acid and antioxidant profiles
  • Interested in factors that influence the bioavailability of functional ingredients
  • Researching the microbiome and how its balance contributes to good nutrition
  • Identifying the potential impact of recent developments in personalised nutrition
  • Developing molecular biology techniques to improve food quality, including CRISPR and GMO
  • Researching - is organic production likely to produce more nutritious food?
SCI Members attending this meeting are able to claim CPD points.

Call for Papers
MSc and PhD students and first post-docs wishing to present have three options:
  • Oral paper (15 minutes)
  • Posters (A0: 1189 mm x 841 mm, portrait) (Open to undergraduate project students)
  • Poster plus flash presentation (5 slides, 5 minutes)
E-mail an abstract of 300 words (max.) indicating preference for presentation option to jacqui.colgate@soci.org by Friday 28 April 2017. Oral presentation slots are limited and will be allocated to achieve a balanced programme. Topics for presentations in any format may be results, reviews or plans.
