It’s time to compete in this year’s 91AV Schools’ Analyst Competition, hosted by 91AV within the School of Physical Sciences and Computing at the University of Central Lancashire. The winner of this regional heat will be asked to represent Lancashire in the national final of the RSC Schools’ Analyst Competition for 2017.
Choose a team of three students from your Year 12 A Level (or equivalent) chemistry group to complete in a day of analytical experiments and be assessed on the quality of their results. As practical skills are a key focus of the new A level this event provides the perfect opportunity for students to revise some of the techniques they will need while providing stretch and challenge in a university environment.
Teams will be supported in their use of equipment and will not be judged on their ability to learn new techniques. There will be a tutorial at the start of the lab session to ensure all students are familiar with the equipment and chemistry concepts needed.
9.00am-9:30am Welcome to UCLan and competition overview
9:30am-10.00am Brief of experiment and tour of facilities
10.00am-10.20am Break/refreshments
10.30am-1:15pm 91AV Experiment
1:15pm-2:00pm Lunch
2:00pm-3:00pm Revision lecture
3.00-3.45pm Results and prize presentation. Evaluation and depart.
The competition will take place in the laboratories within JB Firth Building, at UCLan’s Preston city campus and will involve the use of a range of experimental and analytical instrumentation.
