Indo-UK Perspective on Water Quality: Threats, Technologies and Options workshop

14 August 2013, Bangalore, India

Introduction
Aim

The workshop aims at facilitating research collaborations between academia and industry in India, the UK and countries in Africa, to understand and develop cutting-edge and affordable technologies for improving water quality.BackgroundIndia is facing daunting challenges in water sector due to the demands of a rapidly industrialising economy and urbanising society. When potential for augmenting supply is limited and water tables are falling, water quality issues have increasingly come to the fore. Total dissolved solids, nitrates and other pollutants have been rising in water across urban and rural areas in India, particularly groundwater, making it non potable.  While groundwater in urban areas is also affected by organic and microbial contamination, rural areas lack good and low-cost water treatment options, giving rise to health issues.  The workshop looks to bring together experts in these areas from the UK and Africa to share expertise and exchange knowledge in relation to these issues.ThemesThe joint workshop will focus on the following topicsWater quality issues – urban and rural
Emerging pollutants
Innovative technologies
Appropriate water treatment technology options
