Imperial Fringe: The Atoms Family

16 March 2016 17:00-20:00, London, United Kingdom

Introduction
All families have their secrets. When atoms get together they could reveal answers to some of humanity’s greatest challenges. From the molecules that could secure our energy supply and limit climate change, to new high performing compounds that will improve our lives, and the biochemistry that could prolong them, find it all at the latest Imperial Fringe.

At The Atoms Family you will be able to:
  • Move tiny particles with just light and take a spin around our optical laser bead racing track with our Chemical Biologists and learn about a techniques to isolate and study individual cancer spreading cells
  • Explore the potential of solar fuels and attempts to build our own ‘synthetic leaves’ that improve on photosynthesis, with our Computational Materials Science Group
  • Do your bit in the fight against climate change by designing your own molecules for carbon capture with our researchers from the Centre for Process Systems Engineering and the Institute for Molecular Science and Engineering
  • Mix together two solids to form your own mysterious ionic liquid that conducts electricity and could in the future produce biofuels or make batteries more efficient
  • Join a special debate featuring esteemed chemistry professors looking at the future trends and challenges facing the field over the next 20 years, entitled Molecular Science 2.0

About the Imperial Fringe series

The Atoms Family is the latest in Imperial College’s Fringe series of public evening events exploring the livelier side of science. Based on the College’s ground-breaking research, the Fringe programme runs throughout the year to give our friends and supporters an opportunity to meet our researchers and find out more about our work.
