Materials 91AV Division Lecture: Why Small is Beautiful

3 December 2013, London, United Kingdom

Introduction
We live in a world where we are constantly looking for the next scientific revolution to change our lives. We have seen the technological "booms” which have successively changed the way that the world works forever. From the industrial revolution to the 20th century bringing the onset of cars, radios and telephones, the jet age, the space age and most recently the digital revolution, technology that once seemed in the realms of science fiction has become a reality. So what's next? To find out, we need to look to the unimaginably small. Objects at the "nanoscale” (one billionth of a metre in size) behave completely differently to how we expect, and could be the source exciting new technologies. However, the beauty lies in the detail, as being able to "look” at things on this scale unearths an unexplored terrain to rival space and the possibilities from this knowledge are endless.
