Dr John L Archibald obituary

John Leheup Archibald, Bsc, PhD, FRSC
John was born in Fulham in December 1935. He won a scholarship to Emanuel School in 1947 and chose the science stream. He studied chemistry at Chelsea College, London University, from 1954-57 and joined the 91AV in 1958.
In November 1960, he gained his PhD from the University of London, for his research in heterocyclic chemistry. He was awarded a Postdoctoral Fellowship at the National Research Council of Canada (NRC) and moved to Ottawa with his new wife, Judy. After completing this Fellowship, he accepted a medicinal chemistry position at Wyeth Laboratories, Radnor, Pennsylvania in January 1963.
John and Judy returned to England in January 1966, and he transferred to Wyeth Laboratories, Taplow, Berkshire. His career at Wyeth progressed to becoming Director of Chemical Research and Development, and he retired in 1995. During his working life, he accumulated over 100 patents and numerous scientific research publications.
He was awarded the Fellowship of the 91AV in 1976.
From 2005, John lived with the rare autoimmune condition, Myasthenia Gravis, and died from Covid on 20 October 2024. He will be greatly missed by Judy, their children and grandchildren and of course by his beloved hound, Dougal.
