Sustainability is a major driver for human activities. Sustainable food and agriculture contribute to food security and will help countries to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals as set out by the United Nations. In particular Goal 2 is to end hunger, achieve food security and improved nutrition and promote sustainable agriculture. There is an increased demand for food for growing populations, rising hunger and malnutrition, adverse climate change effects, overexploitation of natural resources, loss of biodiversity, and food loss and waste. Chemists and chemistry are pivotal to the achievement of sustainable and viable ecosystems and facing the challenges that will face humans and the planet in the next 50 years. Ingenuity and innovation are essential components of the future and chemistry will be at the forefront of our efforts. This meeting is a timely reminder that, for all the high-level discussions at COP and elsewhere, the achievement of goals is not simply a question of stopping doing things – it is as much about finding new and better ways with science at their core.
