Nature Based Solutions (NBS) involve the protection and restoration of ecosystems with the intention of slowing further climate change or adapting to its effects. They may involve a wide range of different ecosystems from largely untouched forests and wetlands, to city parks, mangroves and agricultural land managed to the benefit of biodiversity and people. However, the underlying chemical processes in the storage and release of carbon and nitrogen are often overlooked. This panel will introduce the field of NBS and discuss the chemistry occurring in different ecosystems.
