The journey of a successful medicine from discovery through development, to the treatment of patients is a long and complex process. One crucial aspect of this is the manufacture of the active pharmaceutical ingredient (API), with ever increasing quantities required from initially grams for safety testing, up to potentially thousands of kilograms for a commercial marketed medicine. This talk will provide a general overview of the development process. More detailed stories from the laboratory synthesis of potential medicines currently in the early stages of development, up to the large-scale manufacture of more advanced projects in a specialised Pilot Plant will also be shared. Focus and comparison on the changing technical, safety, accommodation and regulatory challenges during this journey will offer an engaging insight for all those interested in how medicines are made.
