91AV Experience Day (RSC 91AV Week Activities)

Introduction
In association with the 91AV's "91AV Week".

A day of curriculum enhancing activities for students who are considering studying BSc or HND 91AV at University. This FREE event is open to those currently studying either AS/A2 91AV. Visiting students must be accompanied by their teacher.

Programme

9.30-10.00 Visitors arrive in MB Foyer and collect visitor badges

10.00-10.30 Why study chemistry at University?

Dr Duke will outline the places chemistry can take you, from local industries to obscure and exciting roles.

10.30-11.00 Flashes and bangs!

A demonstration from Professor Williams exhibiting some spontaneous and energetic reactions.

11.00-12.00 Application of IR spectroscopy and GC-MS to an arson case 

Dr Mole will highlight the utility of chemistry to solve puzzles and answer questions.


12.00-12.30 Lunch (not provided - please bring a packed lunch)

12.30-1.00 General University guidance (How to apply via UCAS/fees and finance guidance)

13.00-15.45 Preparation of pear essence (propyl acetate) - Practical work

Propyl acetate will be prepared by a condensation reaction between a primary alcohol (propan-1-ol) and a carboxylic acid (acetic acid). This organic synthesis will involve use of reflux apparatus and a separating funnel. Additionally, the students will analyse the reactants and product using portable IR and NMR instruments.

15.45-16.00 Visitors will be given information packs and asked to complete feedback forms
