The UK shale oil and gas industry: licensing, planning, and community engagement

Introduction
This seminar will provide a timely opportunity to assess the development of the shale industry in the UK.

The agenda will bring out latest thinking on the planning process and issues around selection of sites for exploration - including safeguarding National Parks, World Heritage Sites and UK water supplies - as well as the potential contribution of shale to the UK energy mix, and prospects for developing skills and investment for the sector.

It is scheduled with the Government’s ongoing bidding process for new onshore drilling licences and the establishment of the independent Task Force on Shale Gas.

The agenda includes keynote contributions from Ken Cronin, Chief Executive, UKOOG (United Kingdom Onshore Oil and Gas), Ed Mitchell, Executive Director of Environment and Business, Environment Agency and Rt Hon the Lord Smith of Finsbury, Chairman, Task Force on Shale Gas and former Chair, Environment Agency. The chairs are Lord Hollick, Chair, House of Lords Economic Affairs Committee and Lord Oxburgh, Board Member, Parliamentary Office of Science and Technology (POST).

Overall, areas for discussion include:
• Opportunities and challenges for shale oil and gas development;
• Latest geological evidence and the UK’s potential shale gas resources;
• Key issues relating to environmental risks and regulation;
• Addressing the challenges in planning, community engagement, environmental impact and energy security;
• Examining the risks and benefits of extraction and an update from the Task Force on Shale Gas; and
• Moving from exploration to production and the industry priorities for commercialising shale.
