What is Disability Confident Committed?
The Disability Confident Committed Scheme is a voluntary government initiative. It has been designed by employers and disabled people’s representatives to help employers recruit and retain people with disabilities and those with health conditions.
Through the Disability Confident Committed Scheme, we are working towards becoming more aware of our responsibilities to disabled workers and individuals with long-term health conditions. We are investing in how we attract and retain these individuals by:
- Improving the knowledge and understanding of disability across the organisation.
- Drawing from wider talent pools.
- Reducing barriers to the recruitment process and progression opportunities for existing staff.
- Improving employee engagement and commitment by demonstrating fair treatment.
Why did we join the scheme?
We want to recruit and retain great people. By joining the Disability Confident Scheme, we aim to better demonstrate our commitments to supporting those with a disability or long-term health condition in the workplace, whether they are looking to join us or are existing employees.
We support the idea that everyone, regardless of disabilities, should have the opportunity to work in a role they are passionate about, in an organisation where they feel supported and valued.
Our Commitment extends to actively encouraging applications from individuals with disabilities and long-term conditions, and ensuring they feel welcome in the workplace.
So, what does Disability Confident Committed mean for us and you?
By joining the scheme, we have signed up to various commitments to support individuals with disabilities or long-term health conditions. We are dedicated to the following:
Interview adjustments
Anticipating and providing reasonable adjustments as required.
Promoting vacancies
We will endeavour to post our vacancies to a wide variety of sites to ensure we are approaching disabled people with our opportunities.
Ensuring our recruitment process is inclusive and accessible
We offer adjustments at all stages of the application and recruitment process.
Supporting existing staff (who have or develop a disability or long-term health condition)
We are committed to helping existing employees flourish within their environment and progress with their careers.
Offering disability-confident interviews
Where possible, we will aim to offer candidates with a disability, and or long-term health condition who meet the essential criteria* an interview as a priority.
*Where there are more candidates who are eligible for the Disability Confident Scheme meeting the minimum criteria than interview slots, the best candidates will be selected from that pool.
